Is your TV watching you? Latest models raise concerns

March 19th, 2012

Samsung
The new Samsung HDTV has hard-wired camera and microphone, plus face recognition and other unprecedented features.

Samsung’s 2012 top-of-the-line plasmas and LED HDTVs offer new features never before available within a television including a built-in, internally wired HD camera, twin microphones, face tracking and speech recognition. While these features give you unprecedented control over an HDTV, the devices themselves, more similar than ever to a personal computer, may allow hackers or even Samsung to see and hear you and your family, and collect extremely personal data. While Web cameras and Internet connectivity are not new to HDTVs, their complete integration is, and it’s the always connected camera and microphones, combined with the option of third-party apps (not to mention Samsung’s own software) gives us cause for concern regarding the privacy of TV buyers and their friends and families.Samsung has not released a privacy policy clarifying what data it is collecting and sharing with regard to the new TV sets. And while there is no current evidence of any particular security hole or untoward behavior by Samsung’s app partners, Samsung has only stated that it “assumes no responsibility, and shall not be liable” in the event that a product or service is not “appropriate.”Samsung demoed these features to the press earlier this month. The camera and microphones are built into the top if the screen bezel in the 2012 8000-series plasmas and are permanently attached to the top of the 7500- and 8000ES-series LED TVs. A Samsung representative showed how, once set up and connected to the Internet, these models will automatically talk to the Samsung cloud and enable viewers to use new and exciting apps. These Samsung TVs locate and make note of registered viewers via sophisticated face recognition software. This means if you tell the TV whose faces belong to which users in your family, it personalizes the experience to each recognized family member. If you have friends over, it could log these faces as well. In addition, the TV listens and responds to specific voice commands. To use the feature, the microphone is active. What concerns us is the integration of [...] Continue Reading…

SoLoMo: CityMaps Nabs $2.5M To Render Your City Social, One Block At A Time

March 19th, 2012

Maps have been around for millenia, but for a significant chunk of that time, they remained static, two-dimensional forms, rendered by hand on paper. It sounds crude now, even as services like Wave have us mapping our worlds with our smartphones like explorers of old. Today, with the ridiculous amount of data available on the Web and in the cloud, maps have become something else entirely, our surroundings coming alive in wizbang, interactive 3-D displays.
Throw in the level of granularity online maps are capable of, even on mobile, and your once-enthralling lists have become boring — bordering on analog. Google Maps is a feat in and of itself, but, again, with the wealth of data now available online about local businesses, their hours of operation, menus, websites, deals, and the ability to interconnect all of them based on location, I’ve been waiting for a smart, visual aggregated service like CityMaps.
For those unfamiliar, CityMaps transforms the cities of New York, San Francisco, and Austin (with more to come by year’s end) into block-by-block grids plotted with nearly every local business out there in an effort to help both natives and newcomers navigate their city. What’s cool about CityMaps is that not only does it include all these local storefronts (from restaurants to dry cleaners), it gives users the ability to mouse over them to see the business’ latest tweets, reviews, menus, hours of operation — even offering daily deals available in realtime based on location (with deals showing up as colored dots).
The DealMap was one of the first startups to really nail the plotting of daily deals on an interactive map, and unsurprisingly the startup was scooped up by Google last August. There are plenty of awesome deal aggregators out there, but CityMaps wants to be the next generation, the ultimate aggregator not only of location, local business, and deal data, but also of social data, adding another few layers to the interactive map experience.
Of course, striving to become a meta aggregator means that there’s plenty of opportunity to over-do it, to create a cluttered UI and a disappointing UX. But last week, CityMaps emerged from beta with a cleaner design and a new mapping engine that reduces most of that concern. Users can now see tips and photos from Foursquare, browse deals in realtime, or use Facebook Connect to see social data along with tweets from local businesses refreshed every hour.
The startup also released its iOS app, which brought the services to mobile for the first time, meaning that users can now click on businesses to make dinner reservations via OpenTable (pretty handy), buy movie tickets, find Foursquare deals from local merchants, read reviews, and look up the next BART or subway departure time — from the Web and on mobile. CityMaps Co-founders Elliot Cohen and Aaron Rudenstine tell us that an Android app is on its way in the next month or so, as is an iPad-specific app. The latter in particular will be huge, as the [...] Continue Reading…

Software allows users to protect personal, university data stored on mobile devices

March 19th, 2012

By Kathleen J. Sullivan

L.A. Cicero

The Mobile Device Management software helps users set and stay current with best-practice privacy controls on their mobile computing devices.

Bill Clebsch, the university’s associate vice president for Information Technology Services, knows – from personal experience – how easy it is to lose a mobile device.
“Once, I left my iPad in a restaurant in the Charles Hotel in Boston, but didn’t realize it until I got up to my room,” he said. “I had a moment of panic.”
But the sense of alarm quickly disappeared when Clebsch realized that no one would be able to steal data stored on the iPad because he had installed the university’s new Mobile Device Management (MDM) software. The software is available for free to faculty, staff and students with active SUNet IDs.
If his iPad had been stolen, Clebsch would have been able to remotely lock the device, reset his password, erase Stanford data or erase all the data by accessing a self-service MDM webpage.
“That’s the kind of peace of mind MDM software brings, whether the data is your own personal data, like a credit card number, or Stanford data,” he said.
As it happened, Clebsch was quickly reunited with his iPad, because he had put a sticker on the back with his name on it, and the restaurant gave him a call.
In addition to protecting iPads, MDM software provides privacy and security for iPhones and IPod Touches. BlackBerry users now get support through the ITS Exchange mailbox/Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) environment. Android support will come in the future.
Leaving such devices unprotected could not only be costly for individuals personally, but it puts the university at risk if those devices contain institutional information that is classified as prohibited, restricted or confidential.
Members of the Stanford community who work with such data can choose an MDM profile that has been customized for higher security. Others can choose a basic MDM profile.
Clebsch said the first group to install MDM software on campus was medical students, who are being weaned away from pencil and paper to digital learning under the Stanford School of Medicine’s iPad Initiative.
The MDM software consists of three parts: a configuration profile that is installed on the device; a website that allows members of the Stanford community to enroll or take remote action on their device; and a service that the device uses to check in with Stanford’s MDM Service to receive new configurations or applications.
“About 95 percent of the mobile devices registered on the Stanford University Network run Apple iOS, its mobile operating system,” Clebsch said.
He said Apple Inc. provided software the company had developed for internal use. Stanford, which obtained the software under a non-disclosure agreement, customized the program for the university community.
So far, campus users have installed the software on 2,153 iPhones and iPads.
The MDM website contains detailed instructions for installing a profile; information on managing mobile devices; instructions for backing up, restoring and recovering a device; privacy information; troubleshooting information; security information; and tips for using the software.

Big Data won't solve your company's problems

March 19th, 2012

The reams of data available to companies are only as useful as the people working with them.
By Ethan Rouen, contributor
FORTUNE — “Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything. Fourteen percent of people know that.” – Homer Simpson
The era of big data is here, the nerds proclaim.
Computers are powerful enough to gather and synthesize terabytes of information to answer questions ranging from how best to compensate employees to how risky is that mortgage-backed security.
But while the numbers don’t lie, how people use them is extremely subjective. Quantitative analysis played a part in the financial crisis of 2007, after all, and companies that think a room full of analysts crunching numbers can solve their problems can do damage to not only their profits and losses but also to their corporate culture and employee well-being.
“Making the decision at the end of the day can be aided by data, but the thought that computers will make all the important decisions is just not true,” says Shvetank Shah, executive director of the Corporate Executive Board (CEB), which recently published a study titled Overcoming the Insight Deficit: Big Judgment in an Era of Big Data. “Saying that I’ve got 10 quant jocks who are going to solve all my data problems is the wrong way to go about it.”
MORE: Are advertisers the new record labels?
There is little argument that many competitive advantages in the future will go to those who most effectively use analytics to guide decisions. Having the data, though, is not enough, Shah says. According to the CEB, only 38% of employees in a 4,941-person study were considered “informed skeptics” who rely on data but not so much that they are afraid to question the results and solicit feedback from others. The rest of the workforce either trust data without question (43% of the study participants) or rarely trust analysis and prefer to go with their gut (19%).
“We have to face up to the fact that our education system isn’t preparing us to analyze data effectively,” Shah says. “We showed people graphs and asked them what they mean, and even folks with Ivy League educations struggled to make sense of the data.”
There are ways to bridge the education gap, though. Shah’s research has shown that training is ineffective when students are told to focus on the analytic tool or software being used. Instead, they should be taught how to interact with the data or, in other words, how to think critically.
One way for a company to ensure that they turn their employees into “informed skeptics” is to work on creating a data-driven (but not data-enslaved) culture, starting with the CEO on down. If the chief executive is on board, others will likely join.
Another effective method, according to Shah, is to hire quants not only for their analytic abilities, but also for their ability and willingness to explain what they do to others. “You’ve got to hire quants for their coaching skills,” he says. “Each quant can improve the decision making [...] Continue Reading…

Microsoft Stock: Still A Reasonable Value

March 19th, 2012

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) is a large software company that produces operating systems, productivity software, gaming systems, online services, and cloud solutions. -Seven Year Sales Growth Rate: 9.6%-Seven Year EPS Growth Rate: 15%+-Dividend Yield: 2.45%-Balance Sheet: PerfectDespite the run-up in stock price, and although it does deserve a somewhat modest valuation to take into account uncertainty regarding Windows 8, the Azure platform, and Office Suite profitability, at less than 12 times earnings and less than 11 times free cash flow, I think Microsoft stock is a reasonable purchase at the current price in the low-to-mid $30?s. Overview Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) is one of the largest and most well-known software companies in the world. The company produces the Windows series of operating systems and the Office Suite of productivity software, which have held dominance in the PC market. The company has very little market share of mobile computing operating systems and software applications, but does have a strong server and tools segment, a reasonably strong gaming/media segment, and an online segment that loses money but is growing revenue and market share. The company spends around $9 billion per year on research and development. The upcoming release of Windows 8 aims to keep control of the PC operating system market and simultaneously take market share of tablet operating systems. Their Azure platform is a strong showing in the increasingly important area of cloud computing. Business Segments Microsoft is divided into the following business segments: Windows and Windows LiveThe Windows division produces and markets Windows products. In fiscal year 2011, the segment produced $19 billion in revenue and $12.2 billion in operating income, which were significantly up from 2009 levels, but down 2% and 6% respectively from 2010 levels. The segment enjoys huge profit margins in developed areas, but the products sell for less money in developing areas, which impacts margins. Server and ToolsMicrosoft’s server division includes Windows Server operating system, Microsoft SQL Server, Windows Azure Platform for cloud computing, System Center, and Enterprise Services. In fiscal year 2011, the segment produced $17.1 billion in revenue and $6.6 billion in operating income, which are up 11% and 19% respectively from 2010, and up significantly from 2009 as well. Business DivisionThis segment primarily produces the Office Suite of productivity software, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, SharePoint, Exchange, and Lync. For 2011, revenue was $22.2 billion, and operating income was $14.1 billion, which were up 16% and 23%, respectively, from 2010. 2010 figures were roughly flat from 2009. This is another segment that has huge profit margins for the company. Entertainment and DevicesThis segment produces the XBox 360, XBox Live, the Kinect, and Windows Phone. In 2011, revenue was $8.9 billion and operating income was $1.3 billion, which are up 45% and 114% from 2010. Between 2009 and 2010, revenue decreased a bit but operating income nearly doubled. Over the last several years, Microsoft has gained the strongest position in gaming, and this division has become much more profitable. Online ServicesThis segment includes Bing and [...] Continue Reading…
